i own a shop, and you might find a real good used one for it at a junk yard, they usually are good, and there about half the price of a rebuilt one, i install a lot of them and have no problems from them but its a lot cheaper than probably having that one repaired, you are right its about out,and it will go out leaving him stranded somewhere, and that's not good at all, but call a few used auto parts places usually you can buy a good one and get it installed for less than a thousand ,probably a lot less than that, and if it comes from a low mileage wreck chances are it will last him a long time, its either that or have that one rebuilt, and the starting price for that will be around 12-1500 bucks if not more, you can call a few places though and check there prices, good luck hope this helps.

RE:
Needing a new transmission for a 1998 Ford Contour! Any information on average costs of getting repaired?
My son depends on his Contour to get to college and work! The car works in reverse, and at this point can be driven in second. But, not first! IT IS AN AUTOMATIC. I am afraid we will not be able to afford to get it fixed. My son can't afford newer car at this time. We checked and added...

On a automatic first and reverse are the first gears you lose. the rest arent far behind. i lost first on my camaro and with me pulling the trans out it still cost $900. Whatever you do dont change the fluid. i know this sounds silly but all the clutch material on high mileage cars with burnt smelling fluid is in the fluid itself that what turns the fluid black. if your drain the fluid and fill with new you will soon lose all gears like within 2 weeks trust me ive done it and had to fork out 2500 dollars for a new transmission. Theres no easy fix and it wont be cheap.

Some transmissions have a filter and the filter never gets changed. Hope thats the problem!
If thats not the problem and you have the transmission rebuilt, there is a good chance it will go out again, and again.
In my opinion, your best bet would be to sell the car and buy a used one.

Scrap it! and I mean it. Even if the transmission was good it is still only worth about $1,800.00 or sell it in 'as is' condition for whatever you can get for it.Place a classified ad and sell it for 'parts car only' and take best offer. Why go thru the headache of replacing the trans. Get another car.

Rebuilt transmission is usually in the $1500 range.
Sometimes you can find them on eBay, but the shipping costs will stagger you. May as well have it rebuilt "locally". Your local mechanic would know rebuild shops. If they have one already done that'll save you time, by buying theirs and give them your old one as "core".
