Advantages include speed, agility, aerodynamics, gas mileage and excess fun.
Disadvantages are easy speeding tickets, lack of other drivers to acknowledge your existence, and the fact that you LOSE in ANY altercation no matter whose fault it is.
Insurance depends heavily on age and experience. A 30-year old married male with a good record can pay as little as $34/mo for full coverage AND medical. An 18-year old on a sportbike can run $5,000 per year for liability ONLY.
Maintenance is pretty simple, but there are certain things that a shop should do, like valve adjustments, jetting, etc. Tires are the #1 most expensive thing on a bike (not counting crashes), and will run you about $300-$400 per year if you ride a lot.
If you have back problems, sportbikes are not for you. Perhaps a naked or standard bike, like an SV650, would be OK. The important thing is to wear all the gear and take an MSF course FIRST. The most important piece of safety equipment is between a rider's ears.

Advantages:
1. Lower gas cost
2. Feeling of freedom
3. More versatile in where it can go, and park
4. More fun than a barrel of monkeys
Disadvantages:
1. Higher maintenance than a car
2. You have to be prepared for all weather
3. Carrying passengers and shopping is more challenging
4. Family will sometimes nag you to stop riding
Insurance can be cheaper than a car - it depends on you age and driving record.
Back problems can sometimes be an aggravation - it depends on the extent of your injury. You have to be able to hold the bike up in all situations, unless you get a three wheeler!
Maintenance - to need tires 1-3 times a year if you truely ride the bike. Typical maintenance at the dealer very 12,000 miles, provided you do the basics.
Have fun! I weight that the heavisest every time...

Insurance is less than for a car.
GAS MONEY!
Actually, you can get out of tight situations easier on a motorcycle than in a car (like going in between two cars) heading at you in each lane.
A good padded seat should not aggravate any back problems, although if you do feel pain when you hit a jarring bump, a car has much better shock absorbers.
Maintenence cost is cheap.
I love my motorcycle. Lots of acceleration, you can split lanes in bumper-to-bumper traffic, with gas prices nowadays I can still cruise my favorite scenic roads and it costs me hardly anything. You are out in the open, even better than a convertible. Drive safely, don't be a maniac, watch out for the idiots on the road, and you should be fine. I have been riding a motorcycle for all my life and, although I've laid it down a few times, I've never had a serious injury.

Advantages:
a) easy to park
b) more mpg than a car
c) minimum legal insurance costs less than a car's
Disadvantages:
a) people WILL back into your motorcycle, knocking it over
b) the tires wear out quicker than you'd think
c) when it falls over, it's not easy to pick up
Insurance:
I have minimum legal on mine, $75/year.
Back problems:
Get a cruiser style or a "standard." Sit on the motorcycle before you buy it.
Maintenance:
Plan on $800/year. This includes getting new tires every two years.

My back problem is a big reason I ride my Bike YEAR ROUND, unless it snows. Most of your weight is on your thighs, (or arms on a sportbike).
Gas Bill in car-$102 per week.
Gas bill in Truck- $125 per Week.
Gas Bill in Motorcycle (41 MPG) -$51 Per Week.
It's a no brainer. I try not to ride in the rain either. Too many idiots in cars.
