Just a question out of the blue about toilet paper that I heard among old fishermen in Alaska.

Neither.. I wide roll it! Why? I buy the cheap stuff and I never thought about crunching but I thought about bunching it
but that would use far too much to roll it is best for me!

I fold it and use several layers, because it is more efficient. By folding the paper, more of the paper's surface area comes in contact with the area to be wiped. Hence, it cleans a larger area and does a better job. Also, folded paper gives more control than crunched paper does.

If u use only one square as suggested u gotta make it usable as much as possable that means fold it
Or use the old military way tear a hole out of a single square put your finger in it and do the dirty cleaning , fold the paper around the finger to clean it off then take the hole piece to clean under the nail.

I fold it so I have more than 1 layer because I don't want my finger tearing a hole in it and doing the dirty work.
