When the air in your throat has a significant amount of helium in it, the speed of sound will be higher there. Your vocal cords are the same length (which determines the wavelength of the sound), so the frequency increases in proportion. That is, your voice becomes higher pitched.

Because the density of Helium is much lighter than air. If you breathed a gas that was heavier than air (like nitrous oxide) your voice would be much lower.

Helium is lighter than air. Therefore when the gas goes out of your mouth and is passing your vocal cords they sound different because the "air" is vibrating differently becuase it is lighter

Helium will displace denser air in your voice box, and since it is less dense the voice box vibrates differently leaving a higher voice.

Helium is "lighter" than oxygen, so it interacts with your vocal cords differently than regular air does.
