Puffers are brackish water fish. A teaspoon per gallon of water is about right for them. If you want to buy a tester, get a specific gravity tester and the right reading for brackish water is 1.012. Sea water is 1.025 and fresh is 1.000.

Remember though, salt does not evaporate so only add more salt when you physically remove water during your weekly, partial 30% water change. Add the salt at the rate of 1 teaspoon per gallon of water you take out and replace.

The salt that you have in your tank will stay there , only water evaporates so you shouldn't have to add salt. There is a gauge you can buy to check the salt , They cost about 15 bucks and can be purchased about anywhere salt water fish are sold. It measures the specific gravity of the water which keeps you aware of salt content.

Figure 8 puffers do just fine in anything from no salt to even full marine levels so don't worry about him, he'll be fine without the salt. One less thing for you to worry about.

you should buy a specific gravity meter and maintain at a level of 1.022 or the salinity around 30. You should check this about every 2-3 weeks.

Adding salt won't do any help because what makes slat water different from fresh water are the minerals. Look for the materials that are found in the sea or salt water bodies of water. Then place them in your tank or pond

A hydrometer measures the salinity levels as well as a thermometer. Put that in your tank, and add the salt until it reaches the preferred salinity.
