Why do alot of people make a big hype about being "original"?

I don't get how so many people strive to be original or different these days. It has gotten so bad, that if you are purposely trying to be different, you are therefore conforming to be different like everyone else is trying to do. I don't think originality is such an important characteristic to posses. I think the most important thing people need to worry about is being yourself. As long as you are doing what you want to do, and you like to do, it shouldn't make a damn if someone else does or likes the same thing. It's actually pretty cool to have those things in common. Do you agree?

I do agree. Also, when you think about it, striving to be "original" is an unoriginal act since there are so many who do so. Besides, true originality does not exist. Everything is a product of countless influences from things and people that came before. Even these original people cannot escape that. Perhaps we can combine influences in a distinctive way, but originality is a fallacy. As you say, just be yourself; going out of your way to be original is just pretentious and futile.

I feel the same way!! Some folks try to look so much alike to be "Different" , they almost have a "uniform" , like Goths. They should just be themselves. I never have worried too much about what people thought of me, I would go to punk shows in a Black Leather Jacket and all metaled out back when punks hated metal, but got respect from the Skinheads because I was myself-I was there because I liked the music, not to impress. I like people who can and do think for themselves, it makes them so much more interesting!! Life is too short to not take advantage of everything YOU want to do, screw what others think you should do!!

I can't stand when people try so hard to live up to being something they are not. For instance the kids today, are so into being Gangsta! With the Thug and Rap music. Is it really that cool to be Ghetto and Poor? Because the people who promote this stuff are not living in the Ghetto they are living in mansions because of the people who are living in the ghetto. But I understand what you say and I do agree.

Because it makes you stand out, makes people look at you. But the only way to be REALLY original is just to be yourself
