Try "Hugo's" on Santa Monica Blvd. They have a great menu, friendly staff, good drinks and you can choose from several reasonably priced items. Also, some unusual choices that you won't find in other restaurants. I've only eaten there once as I live in O.C. and don't get to L.A. much, but I will certainly go back there again when the opportunity presents itself. They also pride themselves in healthy, fresh foods that aren't over-salted and contaminated with hormones, pesticides, antibiotics and the like.

Marix Tex Mex-very fun, popular alternative lifestyle scene. Great margaritas.

Cobras and Matadors-Spanish tapas-near Fairfax and Beverly. They have a great french toast churro dessert.

Thai food... walk into any Thai food place with an A rating and you're good to go! Also, Al Wazir on Sunset (or is it Hollywood...) for chicken shawerma & hummus! Good stuff and it won't break the bank!
