Both are in the Kingdom Animalia, Subkingdom Eumetazoa, the unranked taxon Bilateria, Superphylum Protostomia, Phylum Arthropoda.

To demonstrate the broadness of the Phylum taxon, other animal Phylums include Cnidaria (corals, jellyfish, sea anemones, hydra), Porifera (sponges), Mollusca (snails, octopi, clams etc) and Chordata (vertebrates, tunicates and lanclets).

Ants are in the unranked taxon Uniramia, Subphylum Hexapoda, class Insecta, Order Hymenoptera, Suborder Apocrita, Superfamily Vespoidea, and make up the Family Formicidae.

Spiders are in the Subphylum Chelicerata, class Arachnida, and make up the Order Araneae
