The Cuban Missle Crisis was the first major showdown of the cold war. While the Bay of Pigs Invasion was a major issue, it was more of a complete failure, not an international suspense... but it does play a major role in the missle crisis.

After the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, JFK came away looking weak and defeated. We had just failed in training Cubans to overthrow Fidel Castro, and if we couldnt succeed there, we had no hope against the Russians. But, in the Cuban Missle Crisis, it was JFK's extreme calm under unbelivable pressure that allowed his popularity and power to skyrocket. He was willing to take a risk, and threaten to invade Cuba if the missles were not removed. In reality, we had no way of knowing if the USSR would back down after that proclamation, but we took that chance. For America to be able to stand up to that Superpower, and basically tell them what move to make was huge. Also, I think this served as a rallying point for Americans, much like 9/11 did. In a time of crisis, we band together, and our pride for our country grows. Even in this dark moment, a light of hope could still shine, because we had made one step towards victory in the cold war, just simply by standing strong.

Russia put missiles in Cuba - facing the US - less than 100 miles from our shores. What happened next was one of the greatest moves ever made by a President. JFK really did nothing. He stood his ground and waited. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said nothing short of full out invasion would work, but JFK made the bold decision to stand his ground and wait using a naval blockade. We went to DEFCON 3 and waited. Russia blinked first, took its missiles and went home. In retrospect, JFK probably prevented the Cold War from becoming a World War - a nuclear one. It was a bold and brave move from a very young president, and if not for him, many of our major cities might have been nuked off the face of the earth. Pax - C

This was the nearest to a nuclear exchange during the entire cold war. Kennedy threatened war and USSR backed down. Intelligence later confirmed that the missles were later snuck in at a later date. Both sides never openly threatened war directly after this incident. After the Cuban missle crisis, the US and USSR settled on proxy wars from Africa to Central America never openly challenging one another again.

It was definitely one because the Russians were helping the communist government in Cuba put missiles that could hit the US and for thirteen days the US and the Soviet Union came as close to a nuclear war as ever.

the world stood on the brink of nuclear annihilation! by blocking the Russian ships carrying missiles to Cuba, the US demonstrated that we would not back down from defending our country against the threat of nuclear attack. it was the supreme standoff. rent the movie, "thirteen days" for a good idea of what happened.

It was probably the closest we ever got to nuclear war. I am glad Khrushev blinked.

We almost blew each other to bits and the whole world with us.
It showed the Russians we were not going to let them bully us and let them put nuclear bombs where ever they wanted.
