I have a three year old zebra danio. I noticed he was bloated two weeks ago, I thought he was pregnant, but someone told me danios don't get pregnant. His belly is so huge. He has cuts by his belly. He has trouble swimming. All the pet stores are closed, I tried to give him peas, but he can't eat them. I don't have another tank to put him in. Please help me. I don't want him to suffer.

It sounds as if your fish has an advanced case of dropsy. This is a symptom of several different internal diseases and usually by the time the fish is badly bloated and no longer swimming well it's too late to save the fish. The problem can be that if the fish dies in the tank it can far more easily spread to the other fish.

I would recommend you remove the affected fish from the tank and humanely euthanize him.

Sorry for the bad news, but it would be in the best interest of your other fish.

Talk me through how you change the water. Pay particular attention to the following questions: How much water do you change each time? Do you add dechloronator? Do you do anything to bring the water up to tank temp? Why haven't you got a heater for a tropical tank?! I know yours broke, but you need a heater!! You're risking the rest of the fish - not just the danios! Danios might be fine in cooler water, but the shark definately won't! How big is the tank? The danios are shoalers - they need more shoalmates. If one's just died, you'll have 3 left? You need at least double that number.
