no,it wont stop it from moving you might hear a lot of noise coming from it and the belt would squeal really loud but the car should still move,if its not moving there's something wrong, that wont stop you from driving it,all that would do is make a lot of noise and eventually burn the belt off of it,but you would still be able to drive it,but it would get hot if you did drive it if the belt broke on it, good luck hope you find the cause of it.

Maybe the "converter"???? (torque converter)
It makes the transmission work.(without getting technical)

ZF torque converter
A cut-away model of a torque converterA torque converter is modified form of a hydrodynamic fluid coupling, and like the fluid coupling, is used to transfer rotating power from a prime mover, such as an internal combustion engine or electric motor, to a rotating driven load. As with the fluid coupling, the torque converter takes the place of a mechanical clutch. Unlike a fluid coupling, however, a torque converter is able to multiply torque when there is a substantial difference between input and output rotational speed, thus providing the equivalent of a reduction gear.

If the motor vehicle sputted on an identical time as attempting to run, it skill is grow to be overburden by an added load. it ought to nicely be the compressor caught. If it quite is the priority, i'm affraid you could no longer be waiting to start the motor vehicle; it won't crank up. attempt using some WD40 on the compressor, verify the belts and see in the event that they're caught, unfastened, etc. i'm affraid you haven't any longer any options. i will provide $60.00 money for it; i will fix it! (merely kidding!)

The A/c compressor will not keep the vehicle from moving. What other symptoms auto or manual trans? I agree with Mr Know it sounds like torque converter.

If the compressor is Siezed yes it can stop your car from running. The belt that runs the compressor is on the same belt that helps run other pumps/parts in your engine. If the pulley for the compressor is stuck then it can mess up the whole engine
