I have a 2002 Ford Escape XLT that has never given me any problems. I was backing out of a parking space and went to put it into drive and it would not move. I still have reverse, 1, and 2 but when I put it into drive it acts as though it's in neutral. Does anyone have an idea what this may be? I had no problems before with it slipping or making any noises. The fluid is black but it does not have any burnt smell to it. I am worried about taking it to a shop because of being taken advantage of being a 26 year old woman. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on this. Thank you!!

Could be as simple as loose linkage on the side of the transmission.

Or, worst case, something internal )-:
Blown overdrive unit?

It's tough to say without looking at it.

Driving in four wheel drive on dry pavement shouldnt hurt unless you have differential lockers and if you do have lockers it would tear up either the spyder gears in the front axle or the rear axle. the planetary gears are usually affected during burnouts. If you still have 1 and 2 but no D it sounds to me like the pnp on the side of the trans that tell what gear you have selected with the shift selector. Will it move foward at all?

Have you been driving in 4 wheel drive? If you have on dry pavement it is possible the planetary gears gave out. This will almost always give out when in reverse. Either way, you need to take it to a transmission shop, just try to find a good one if possible. Transmission work is expensive, if the gears are gone you are looking at $1000 - $2500.

1st of all i would like to clarify that driving on pavement in 4wd will not just stuff your gearbox and transfer case but your diffs as well...Your problem though sounds to me it needs a tranny service. They drain and flush the gearbox, replace the valves, balls, filters and gaskets and retop with oil. This by far should get your drive gear back as having black oil has probably cloged up the valvles and filters. Not expensive to do as evan ya hubby could do it.

need to have the computer modules checked out that control all that happening... sounds like they need adjusting or full out replacing...got a good garage you trust? or a dealer? Auto Zone can read the computer codes from the black box to see what its recording happening/give you some advice/should be at no charge..but dio not continue cuz you're gonna start tearing things up there....
