It goes back for centuries. My family is better than your family, my school is better than your school, my town is better than your town, my country is better than your country. This is a way of settling it.
We like to identify with large groups. I go to one high school, you go to another. Sports events between the two are a way of comparison.
And, when the Red Sox beat the Yankees, it's an expression of a rivalry between the cities. New York might have better opera facilities, but Boston has a better pitching staff. The Sabres' fans may send their taxes downstate, but their hockey team can beat the Rangers.
As look as you don't take it seriously, it's good fun.

Man.
Good question, I cant think of anything.
Just one of those weird things people do, I guess.
You can't just decide to like sports, it just has to happen, and you cant explain it. Its quite wonderful when it does happen.
Its one of those things that you just need it to happen to you to get it, and its impossible to describe.
