To the extent that humility is essential to self knowledge, I believe it does. Knowing one's self is essential to making an accurate appraisal of another person. An inaccurate appraisal of another usually amounts to stealing their thunder. The theft of another's thunder is a manifestation of a lack of character.
Additionally, I believe that the self-discipline required to find and accept the truth about one's self not only builds character but is, it's self, a manifestation of character.

I hate being humble.
The world keeps trying to make me into some insignificant little nobody, while I try to achieve greatness.
