If you are really wanting to kill a tree the quickest method is to do what Coop saw happen. By girdling the tree with a deep cut you effectively cut through the tissues in a tree which conduct fluids. Just under the bark is the active part of the tree, the cambium, phloem, and xylem. When you sever these areas the tree has no way to move water from the roots up to the top of the tree. Likewise all the food that the leaves make cannot be transported to the roots. You basically choke the tree to death.

Never heard of a nail killing a tree. But recently somebody somehow or another cut rings into trees around their trunks at our local courtehouse. Somehow or another this lead the the death of the trees. Not exactly sure how that worked and it sounded farfetched at first, but sure enough when I drove past all the trees that these kids did this to had to be cut down because they were dieing.

I can't see how a nail will kill a tree? Best way to kill a tree is to ringbark it . The tree will definitely die if you do that

Supposedly, copper nails will kill a tree. Don't hold your breath waiting for it to fall over though.
