Mudslides are common in California and other areas that recieve concentrated rainfalls. Avalanches are common throughout moutain areas where heavy snowfalls occur. Landslides are usually small and can occur just about anywhere there are cliffs. Landslides can be caused by precipitation, erosion or man made influences (a person walking along a mountain path or mining operations, or gunfire resonating against the cliff wall).

Landslides resulting in death are rare unless you count people walking too close to the edge of a cliff. Avalanches have probably caused more deaths, most recent cases that come to mind were this winter in Washington (Mount Hood area).
