Ok, so here is the deal. My husband and I recently got married, but I cannot move with him right away. He is going back to his station to sign in tomorrow. (He's in the Marines!) We are trying to get me signed in, but... to do that can I send him with a copy of our marriage certificate or do they really need the original? He will be in S.C. while I'll still be in N.Y. I would hate to send him with the original because it will probably get lost, lol. But, I don't want him to get down there and he needs the original. We are trying to move me there a.s.a.p. Any help or info from experienced persons would be greatly appreciated!
Just shooting for it... Do you also know how long it would take before I am eligible on his insurance and when I can start using it? I kind of need it! Thanks again!

My husband was in the military when we got married so here's the scoop:

1) He will need the original marriage certificate, it has to be stamped with the state seal and they can't take a photo copy of it. You should be able to get more than one copy, if you are really worried about it getting lost with him taking it. But, your bigger problem is this: he can't get you a military id without you. You have to have your marriage certificate (the original) and your social security card plus they have to take a picture of you so you have to be with him.

2) You can not be added to his insurance (TriCare) until you are added to the military system (DEERS). You can not be added into DEERS (don't ask me what that stands for) until you are with him to get your id card.

Once you are added to TriCare, it will become effective the first of the month following your turning in the paperwork (so if you were to sign up tomorrow, you could use it June 1). Between the time you turn in paperwork and the time it officially becomes effective, if you have an emergancy, they will cover you but, you can't go in for "routine care" or make appointments until the effective date.

However, if there is a military base near you, he should be able to go to any one of them (Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines) and get all of this done. Or maybe you can take a day trip to SC to get it all done.

Good luck!! My hubby and I just moved from NC to WA with the military, let me know if you have any other questions. I'll do what I can to answer them for you.

Retired military here, It's best that he has the
original as the military whenever introduces new
paperwork needs the original, you can always get
another original from the courts to which you got
married if needed, however do have copies on
hand. Not sure of what you mean eligible on his
insurance, as you would be eligible for medical
benefits, commissaary, PX, etc, once he has
applied for you dependent I.D. card, and you will
have to be with him for that as it is the first time.
If he is going overseas he has enough time to get
that done for you as it only takes as long as it does
to fill out the paperwork. Do get your dependent
military I:D: card as you can use it for the benefits
as long as you are married to him .

You can send him with the copy as long as it has the seal and is stamp by the courts and you can just go down to your court house and have them do that for you ( same place you got the licenses from ). As far as your move you need him to go to his command and let them know that he is now married and he wants to move his wife to SC he is going to have to fill out paper work for the move and they should give him money for the move by next pay date so if you do it now you should have it by the 1st and that way you can move but remember to keep all of your receipts so that way you can turn them in and they should give you more money for that. As far as the insurance he needs to go and put you on his page two ( not sure if it’s the same term as the navy) but once he puts you on that you are ready to go to tri care and sign up with them then you can go to a doctor well that’s all you need to know hope you enjoy your new military life

once he puts you in deers, ( the military's computor system) and sets you up in tricare you should be good to go for health care..
he will need the original to put you in deers and you social security number. stress to him how important that document is..
