There are several power drill bits you can use. Don't use a stone drill bit.
The cheapest is the spade bit. It has a point (sometimes with a threaded tip on it) and two sharpened edges. You get one that is stamped as 1" and poke the point in the center of the place you want the hole. You need to hold the drill steady, applying pressure to keep it cutting, and easing up when it is ready to break through the back of the wood (stop frequently to check).
There is also a forstner bit. It is more expensive. It has a stubby screw tip and a rounded edge that will cut cleaner since it is the shape of the outside edge of the hole. It requires more pusing force to keep it cutting. Again be careful it does not break out the back edge of the hole although that is less likely since the entire circumference will be cut at the same time.

Forstner bit works best. Manual drill is fine. If your electric drill is the plug-in type you should have no problem. If it's cordless, make sure the battery is fully charged. Anything smaller than 18 volts might choke on this one. Depends on what kind of wood you're cutting & how sharp your bit is.

Use a birdhouse bit available at any home improvement store. Yes a power drill will work nicely. Be sure there are no electrical wires behind the spot you want to drill. Good Luck

There are several types of bits that you can use. A spade bit or an auger bit are pretty common. If you have a manual drill, then take it with you to make sure you can find a bit that fits it.

Power drill with a 1 inch wood bit. Any hardware store should have them. I bought one for my birdhouses, and that's what it said on the package - one inch wood bit. It is flat with a sharp point sticking out on the middle of the tip.

I use a forstner bit. They're only a couple of bucks and they cut clean and fast.
