My temperature is currently at 80 F, and I want to lower it. I can't afford to buy a heater, so if I set the heater at a low temperature (68), will it cool down the tank?

Sorry, I meant to say I can't afford to buy a cooler.

Try setting the heater a little lower (76F or so) so that it will not come on, but no, setting it really low will not cool the tank.

if the room temperature is below 80 then lowering the heater should cause the water to get cooler too, but If you have lights over your tank they may be heating the water too. Lots of people use fans over their tanks to promote evaporation and get the water cooler. Fans also move the heat from the lights into the room rather than right over the water. One suggestion, if you have fish, don't to any large changes suddenly. If the water goes from 80 to 68 in a few days, that could really stress the fish.

If you lower the heater, the heat will go down since the heater is working to KEEP it at 80F. If 80 is the temperature your tank is at without a heater, then nothing but a cooler will lower the temperature.

if you turn down the temp, the heater will go off. then keep the lid open so room temperature air can get in easier. wait a while then check the temperature. it should be going down unless the room is over 80 degress, which i'm guessing it isnt. this has always worked for me!
