Victory in the war will be extremely difficult unless we change our goals. The biggest problem is that most Iraqi's don't want a consolidated state. They want autonomous rule with geographic boundaries separating the Kurds from the Sunnis and the Shiites. It that's what they want then it;s going to happen eventually. Doesn't matter what we (the US) want.

It's plain and simple. Any war that the US tries to get involved in, will be a lost cause. Why were they in Iraq in the first place? What did Saddam and Iraq ever do to the US?
It's going to be the Vietnam War all over again. It's always going to be the same. This is just a modern version of colonisation. Instead of spices and cotton, it's oil. They can choose to back it up with whatever excuses, but the truth of the matter is, it's doing wonders for the US economy.
But you can't win a war fought on foreign territory. Tens of thousands of innocent lives have been killed. What can you do? Kill the entire nation?
Is it any wonder why the Iraqis are up in arms fighting with the US army? It's not just a simple matter of whether they wanted democracy or not.. In the old system, a lot less people were killed. You do the math.

You're right to question the polls. The answer you get often depends on the question you ask. For instance, what is "success" in Iraq? Depending on what question you actually ask, you'll get different answers. Establish a democracy? It's a success. Establish a democracy that the majority of Iraqis wants? It's a failure. Frankly, I don't think the American people have ever been given a straight and honest answer for why we went into Iraq the second time. It was such a stupid move. We had a tough Iraqi Sunni keeping the Iranian Shiites at bay, and instead of working with him to moderate his politics, we overthrew him and set the Iranians loose. Bush knows why, and it wasn't WMDs (there weren't any), and it wasn't Al Qaeda (they were working out of Afghanistan/Pakistan). Maybe some day we'll find out.

It depends how you define "winning" and "losing."
You could say we already won so it's time to bring our troops home. We expended an enormous amount of money plus thousands of lives, and succeeded in giving the Iraqis a chance. They held elections. We got rid of an obnoxious dictator, Saddam. George Bush declared four years ago that we have won, the war is over, "mission accomplished." So let's say we won and now let our troops come home.
On the other hand you could say we lost already. If the goal was to set up a democratic regime in Iraq favorable to the interests of American government and American business, then face it - that's not going to happen. Terrorists are stronger than ever and are delighted that US troops are still there because it enhances the appeal of Al Qaeda to the Iraqi people. Now we have nothing to gain by staying on in Iraq and should pack up and leave not next year but NOW.

we went to Iraq because we believed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Since the beginning of the war until now, there have been no evidence of any weapons of mass destruction. so what is America fighting for? for freedom, for democracy, so that the people of Iraq can enjoy life without the dictator called SAdam? before the war, there were no innocent lives been killed. the news don't show all the destruction the American army has made so far. there was an article from Time magazine or Newsweek, it said that the American forces inspect places at random some times to catch terrorists. there was this one incident, where a 12 year old was shot to death because the American forces believed he was a terrorist. later, they realized the kid was innocent, so you know what the American forces did? they paid his parents 5000 U.S. dollars for the death of that kid. there are similar cases like that every where in Iraq, where U.S. forces accidently kills people because it so called happens during war. so far the U.S. Forces have paid about 2.1 million dollars for people who were shot by accident. can you imagine taking lives because you mistaked them for terrorists? and then go on paying only 5000 dollars or less for those lives. what is it that we are fighting for? there are no WMD, there are more deaths in total that have accumulated because of this war, and above all else, the Iraqi government went on vacation this week. so what does this tell you about this war, it's a waste of time. democracy can't exist in that part of the country. that part of the country will always bring up new dictators, since Iraq is seperated with sunni's,shiites, and other muslim tribes. so no matter who becomes president, the whole Iraqi country will not follow because of the way their traditions is in place.
did you know that the Iraqi passed a carbon law some time ago, making it possible for exxon mobil to go into Iraq to set up new refineries for oil production. did you know that the cost for these oil giants to go into iraq will cost the Iraqis more money, and the oil giants are aiming to deplete Iraq's natural resources which is oil.
the war is about oil and how much america can get it for a cheap price, since america is the world's biggest oil user. the children of Iraq are having hands on knowledge of how the U.S. is occupying that country. the U.S. forces are creating future terrorists right now, because the Iraqi children are learning about the U.S. power.

the war was a lie . an intentional lie made up by people who were around before Clinton . Clinton would not do what the war people wanted so they had to wait . bush came along and took the crap hook line and sinker. you cant win a war in which there is no reason for the war in the first place.
now if bush had said we just want Saddam out then OK but no he had to lie even more and say big weapons were there and that the terrorists were from there . none of them were from there. all but 3 were from Saudi Arabia.
so yes the war is lost .

It is quite pathetic to label anyone who thinks that the war is lost as not supporting our troops. It is disingenuous of you to make such a dumb claim. Bush has made nothing but major mistakes so far, and the war is going very badly. Do you really think that the moron will suddenly start making good choices and turn the war around? Quit dreaming and wake up. Look around. Very few americans still have this foolish dream.

The war in Iraq was won in just a few days. The U.S. army rolled over Hussein's forces, no problem at all. What we're losing is a good reason for being in Iraq. Apparently the Iraqis weren't ready for democracy. Who'd a thunk it?

We won our war in 2003. Right now the war is between Sunnis, Shiite. Not between the US and 'terrorists.'
We're just babysitting Iraqis fight each other. Iraq is using our troops to guard their streets. We're not fighting 'war' there right now. Iraqis are.

for Zillion times i have said these no Muslim Country will ever become democracy. All Muslim
countries run their government by RELIGON LAWS ONLY.
so next time do not think for a 2ND that any western countries with their own polices can ever change any Muslim countries unless the people inside wants it.
