I think it's some nature, more nurture. Men are socially encouraged to defend themselves physically, whereas women are encouraged to step back and leave the fighting to the men. Also, men are in the familial position of power in which it is their responsibility to commit violence on behalf of the family.

For one, men can fail worse than women. A man without any money or power is a de-masculine man, a woman without money or power is still a woman. That may offend some women, but I know a lot of women on the poorer side of life that accepts that fate because it's expected of them. Men in the same position, however, are expected to take money and power if they can't earn it, and many on the lower side do.
A nice comparision would be to look at female violence in schools verse adult life. I bet you'd see that females do start out as violent, but as adults, they learn that this really isn't the role they're suppose to take (whereas men often are encouraged to continue this role).

Woman nag and whinge that is why they say a woman strength is in her tongue.
Men express there anger through hitting things or drinking , it's not a good method but it's what we have been taught as a basic instinct and something that only men can change by teaching their sons.
Men NEED violence when they or their family is being threatened.
Generally though no we don't need violence we just need better ways of dealing with anger.

biologically- testosterone. sociologically- its more than nature v. nuture, depending on the culture there are varying degrees of violence. Also the culture who has this violence probably does not view that act as violece but as a wat of life. for example, their are cultures who restrict women and if the women break their bonds they are beat/stoned/burned however the culture that has that act of violence does not see it as an act of violence but a way to maintain order. also there are i believe african tribes that allow men/boys/male children to punch their mothers sisters and i believe fathers also. the reason why Americans look at that like wtf crazy violence is because we are looking at it with that set of morals/standards/norms/mores/laws/folkways. i do not feel that men specifically need violence i feel society as a whole needs violence. another point for why coomit more violence than women sociologically speaking is because of all the cultures on earth very few are controlled by women. men may have started to use their strength and aggression to keep women and children in line until society formed then naturally it was ingrained into every facet of society.

Why do men commit more violence? More than who? I'd say there are many other animals on this planet that commit more violence than men do. Lions, alligators, hawks, etc. All animals commit violence. Man just commits "senseless" violence. For food is a good reason, to protect ones young is a good reason. But to be able to continue to buy gasoline is not a good reason.

People who commit violent crimes tend to have higher levels of testosterone, so many believe there is a biological reason. However, there are several other indicators, including socio-economic status, intelligence, education and upbringing (violent). Many people who abuse were abused themselves.
I also think there is some sort of ego building thing with some men. It's really just bizzare. They definitely don't need violence, but so many of them just can't turn their back on a fight.

Men must have violence. As innocent as WWF and extreme as serial killing. They crave violence. Although, looking at crime stats from the DOJ and other "credible" sources women are not far behind. It is in the DNA.

I think because the devil is after dad.
If a king wanted to take and destroy a city, he wants the king, so go figure, the devil wants the head of the house, the priest, provider and protector of the home,
and when he gets the man, he has the whole family, the whole city, the whole country.

I think it is because woman can talk to their friends about their problems and they arnt as affraid of admitting they have a problem they need help with!
Most men feel like its unmanly to show their emotions so when they bottle them it usually ends up in a violent outburst!

Anthropologically, men have to be agressive to spread their seeds. So, yes, its in the nature. Also, very few men are raised with emotional support. So, yes, its nurture too.
