The "M" is the slightly older socket type that the mobile processors tend to use. This is for the Centrino Duo's and Pro's. These are still being sold in new systems but I don't think they are quite top of the line anymore.

The "D" is the older line of P4 processors. These supported hyperthreading and we're pretty kicken (2.4-3.2Ghz) but they were single core. They were top dog for a while and are still readily available. Some people still prefer these for gaming systems on the cheap.

The Core Duo, Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Xtreme are all variants of the same first line of dual core processors. The idea here would be that each model has two progressively faster cores. These are currently market top dog. They are just about the best you can realistically buy on the market.

The Quad core line is Ultra new still, and yet they are already talking eight cores. As processors go right now this would be crazy fast. There are even systems out running two of these badasses. Realistically these are unreasonable for the price but they do exist.

"M" is engineered for mobile/laptop, "D" is the regular types, 2 is the version of the Duo brand, the English description of Duo (Dual) means two CPUs in one physical casting, Quad is obviously 4.
