The English Civil war started in 1642 and lasted till at least 1651. It was caused by Charles the Ist who believed Kings had a God given right to rule which clashed with a Parliamentary Democracy. It was the clash between centralized power and decentralized power, this was played out again in the Revolutionary War and U.S Civil war.

Long term causes: This period was a a time of transition from a feudal economy to a capitalist economy. The gentry and merchants wanted to be free to make money and felt that the crown interfered in this. Also, religious divisions between standard Anglicanism, Puritanism, and Arminianism increased after the reformation in England, especially once Charles came to power in 1625 and inserted Arminians like William Laud to the Archbishopric of Canterbury. Most Anglicans (Calvinist) and especially Puritans (super Calvinists) did not like this. They confused Arminianism with Catholicism and were afraid of a popish plot from the king's court.

Short Term Causes: The Bishops Wars with Scotland (1639, 1640) and the Irish Rebellion (1641) are prime causes of the English Civil War. There would have been no English Civil War without the conflicts in Scotland and Ireland. In order to quell Scotland, Charles was forced to call the long Parliament in 1640, something he hadn't done in 11 years. This Parliament would sit until 1660.

In 1642 the King arrested 5 MPs and was forced to flee London for his life afterwards. This was the beginning of the Civil War.

Ultimately, this mix of short and long term causes helped spark the Civil War. Remember to always look at the English Civil War as part of the larger War of the Three Kingdoms. the English Civil War did not and could not have happened on it's own.
