What smell are you talking about? If you're talking about an odor coming from wet carpeting, you need to spray the carpet with Febreeze ( says "fabric" on can) & then remove the excess water out of the carpet as best as you can, then let the carpeting air dry outdoors if possible.

If the carpet has been wet for along time, you will never get rid of the smell. You can mask it with febreeze or another commercial product but the true stinch will always linger. Been there, done that and replaced the carpet.

It can be difficult. If the carpet is wall to wall, you may have to pull it up off the tack strip. You would dry a section, then pull up another section. You have to get some fans going.
You may need a shop vac to get the water up. If there is padding, it may need to be replaced.

(AN old remedy)I have heard of putting water in a bowl and putting apiece of bread in it and putting them around the room. its supposed to draw in the smell to the bread. also you can try to use a carpet cleaner(they rent them at the home depot) and try to draw out the moisture....
