I was fishing recently and there was a bit of rain in the area....some cloud to cloud lightning....we were in an aluminum boat....we start hearing this buzzing noise, kind of like a cicada. it happens for maybe 7-10 seconds and then our hair felt like it was standing up and we felt a whoosh of energy over the top of us and we hear thunder....never saw a flash..another boat about 300 yards away reported the same buzzing noise from their fishing rods back at the launch...how close were we?

You almost got zapped...! The buzzing sound and your hair standing up is a sign that a very large difference in voltage existed where you were and the cloud overhead. You got very lucky, though, because the lightning stroke must have found a higher difference in voltage across which it discharged. Since you didn't see a flash but heard thunder, the stroke must have been cloud-to-cloud nearby.

Very close.
The hair standing on end is the best clue. That is static electricity. Next time take a long steel rod and a long wire with you. Fasten the wire to the boat and dangle it in the water. Raise the rod in the air and wait. Is you are lucky, you will be hit. Post a picture of your fried body for us.

Too close. Never be in water when there is any chance of lightning and anytime it rains there can be lightning strikes. Glad you weren't roasted.
