Lossen up the first few inches of the soil with hard rake or roto-tiller. Then spray a grass and week killer. It has to have both as there may some type of wild grass you dont want there. A few days later, do the same thing. You might have to repeat one more time. Then pack the soil down. If it does not rain, water the soil a few times, this clears out the weed and grass killer. As for the next steps you may need some expert advice. The soil may need some nitrogen or other treatment.

There are many poisons you can buy. Herbacides come from many manufacturers..Some will kill grass and some will kill broad learf plants. Consider your circumstances first. Do you have pets will children play in that area.. Never forget poison is poison and will kill. You if you are not careful..or just pull them out roots and all
