I think I need new and more lava or gas grill rocks, but my neighbors say it doesn't matter. cause they don't have any
am I right?

Lava rocks are supposed to spread the heat. So are the ceramic briquets. The only thing I can see that they do is catch falling grease. Your problem is probably a bad burner or the venturi tube that mixes air with the gas is plugged.

Lava rocks are in a same class as pet rocks; a fad
Gas is faster than charcoal, easier lighting
My new gas grill doesn't have that stuff did 3 racks of ribs in 15 min
