The top three are widely felt to be:

RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) which is in Bloomsbury (Central London)

LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) which is in Hammersmith

"Central" (Central School of Speech and Drama) which is in Swiss Cottage

These are all full-time courses. Can I sugggest you get hold of a prospectus for half a dozen schools and see what interests you? Go and see a production at the ones that interest you and hang around and chat to students there.

Other popular choices are:

Guildhall School of Music and Drama, which is next to the Barbican Arts Centre in the City of London

Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts (which is in Wood Green N22)

The important thing, whichever school you choose, is that your course be an accredited one. The National Council for Drama Training is the body that does this. It's primary role is to safeguard the highest standards and provides a credible process of quality assurance through accreditation for vocational drama courses in further and higher education in the UK.

The accreditation it provides aims to give students confidence that the courses they choose are recognised by the drama profession as being relevant to the purposes of their employment; and that the profession has confidence that the people they employ who have completed these courses have the skills and attributes required for the continuing health of the industry.

Everyone always says RADA but it's really a case of which school suits you best, if you want to go down the classical route RADA is very good, they also pick a wide, diverse range of actors, if however you want to be trained in all aspects of acting (theatre, film, TV, voice work) then I'd try Guildhall or LAMDA which are excellent schools, I think Central is a bit over-rated as a school, it's campus is wide spread and the contact with teachers can be limited and most people I meet from there tend to have bad stories to tell. Also consider Bristol Old Vic which has a very old school method, like RADA their actors tend to be excellent on stage but at Bristol they looked a bit OTT on TV and in film...that is a generalisation though, you have to find the best one for you.

The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts is located in London.
Call or write to them requesting a brochure about their acting program.
