She suffered from severe depression, insecurity, drug use, dependency on psychiatrists , and alcohol. She did not overcome her problems. Her Mother was In a mental institution and Marilyn was convinced she was going to go insane. That was why she had such a dependency on psychiatrists.

She was a very good actress look at some of her movies such as: Niagara, bus stop and the misfits. Her comedies made her out to be dumb, but she was a highly intelligent woman.

I think all of the answers before me have merit. However, I take exception with the idea that she couldn't act. She was never taken seriously because she played the perfect blond bombshell. In reading about her some time ago, she was not dumb. And if you watch her movies, to play that "dumb blond" caricature required great planning and a natural sexiness that has yet to be out done.

Who do we think of when we think of sexy blond bombshells? Marilyn Monroe. Who do people like to dress up as and imitate? Marilyn Monroe.

She oozes sexuality and that's why she is still famous today. That type of image takes work and dedication. She wasn't dumb at all. She just knew how to pull it off.

I think Marilyn's disability was her feeling of never being loved. She had a very unhappy childhood and was institutionalized. I don't think she overcame her feelings of being unlovable and worthless.

Another disability was the fact that she couldn't act. She tried hard (took lessons) and wanted to be taken seriously as an actress, but she simply didn't have the ability.
