Are you asking which works best? I've done both and both methods work fine, but I prefer pruning as it seems easier on the plant and my fingers. Snip them just above new growth.

Either one is fine - same results. But I prefer... the wave petunias. They are the most wonderful, easy, carefree plant ever. They don't have to be pinched/cut back at all - ever. They bloom all summer, all the time, they cascade over the sides of the pot, just wonderful. Maybe it's time to try the wave! Also they come in several different colors - dark purple, fushia, light lilac, white and pink that I know of.

don't prune a petunia! just pick the "spent" blooms off (deadheading) which encourages the plant to send out new growth and new blooms! it also gives more energy to the blooms that are just opening! the "spent" blooms should pull cleanly from the plant. just look for the ones that are sagging!

You want to pinch all of the dying blooms off frequently.

Pinching back once it has finished bloom, they will dry up that is when you pinch and more flowers will bloom.
