Setting a router to act a a bridge simply pases all communications straight through from one network to the other. This has no real value in normal use. Used in router mode it translates addresses for any machines connected and decodes the returned replies, this is how routing for multiple computers works.

Bridge mode is the configuration of a modem that allows it to be able to use a router generally without conflict. If a modem is not put into bridge mode before hooking up a router it will conflict as both devices will attempt to host the internet connection inside of themselves. To ensure that your modem is in bridge mode, connect your PC or Mac directly to the modem and contact the manufacturer of the equipment or, if the modem is one that your ISP (internet service provider) supports, they should be able to assist you in proper configuration of the device.
