I doubt any of them were dropped on their heads as children!

It is a little known fact that most serial killers have suffered head trauma at some stage in their lives.

If phrenology was studied more thoroughly, I'm sure there would be a common denominator among the Greats.

I also tend to think that many who have achieved greatness, had many conflicting views and interests thrown in their paths.

If he could get the dollars needed to be viable, I would be part of any organization dedicated to extending his two terms as President. I know of no one elected, that currently works at the Capital or the White House, who has the amount of common sense along with a genius type intellect; as Alan Keyes. We should be so lucky!

Being highly focused, almost fixated on a goal.
In some ways I wish I could say I had more of that characteristic. I think it's a price I pay for being balanced, but I'll take it.

They were vegetarians or animal rights activists. This site will prove my point.

"I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being."
Abraham Lincoln, 16th U.S. President

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. -Mahatma Gandhi

I'm a vegetarian - I think there's a strong possibility, had I not become a vegetarian, I would not be working now. I became a vegetarian about 25 years ago, and I did it out of concern for animals. But I immediately began having more energy and feeling better -Bob Barker

"How can you eat anything with eyes?" Will Kellogg (creator "Kellogg's Corn Flakes")

"In their behavior toward creatures, all men are Nazis. Human beings see oppression vividly when they're the victims. Otherwise they victimize blindly and without a thought."
Isaac Bashevis Singer, author, Nobel Prize 1978

"Nothing more strongly arouses our disgust than cannibalism, yet we make the same impression on Buddhists and vegetarians, for we feed on babies, though not our own." Robert Louis Stevenson (novelist and poet)

"Nothing will benefit human health, and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth, as much as the evolution to a Vegetarian Diet" -ALBERT EINSTEIN

"Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages."
Thomas Jefferson, 3rd U.S. President

"I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't...The pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further."
Mark Twain, author

"Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages."
Thomas Edison, inventor

Many of them were charismatic leaders who were motivated by a strong, idealistic goal.

EDIT: OK, bad examples from me earlier *sorry*. However, many of today's influential figures were leaders, and effective leaders have the 3 R's

Recognise- Be able to spot a problem.

Respect- Be open-minded and be able to see things from both sides of the argument.

Reconcile- Being able to find remedies or ways to solve problems that's agreeable for both sides.

However, I think one needs a strong voice to carry their points across to be an influential leader. And have the courage to get involved in the issues of being one.

But, to be more exact.... They say like minds, think alike.... let it be known that those who excel at being great are constantly in practice thinking on being greater... perhaps, not for self gain... but for the good of society as a whole...
