I have rather small fingers and can't get my 1st and 3rd fingers to make a bar chord on my accoustic guitar, does any one have any suggestions, like finding a guitar where the frets are not spaced out as wide as my accoustic.

Different makes of guitars have different widths of necks, and there might be some that are narrow enough for your hands.
So look in a musical shop at all guitars, to see if there is enough difference for you.

But it can also be that you will get better when you develop your muscles.
And in the mean time, can you work around those bar's.
There are a lot of alternative cords for each of the often used ones.
You can ask your teacher, if you have one, or get a book/web-site where they show you all cords.
I used to have a book like that. (I could not handle the bars, but for me it was lack of muscle.)

Perhaps you need 1/2 size guitar.
