. The Short Story Formula

As you probably all remember from Middle School, a short story follows a certain formula. A graphic of the formula is shown below. Look at it and then read about what happens in each part of the short story.

Exposition - Introduces the characters, setting, conflict, etc.

Rising Action – elaborates on the conflict, develops characters, introduces tone, furthers the plot, builds suspense, etc.

Climax – decisive point where the conflict must be resolved: could be either a positive event or a negative one.

Falling Action – the results of the climax occur: these events can't really be helped because the the climax dictate what must happen next.

Resolution – (also called the denouement) the end result of the climax and falling action. In a short story, it is possible that the climax, falling action, and resolution can all be very close together.

Just remember, all short stories are not built alike. Some vary this formula by combining, deleting, or shortening parts. For now, you have to work with the five parts.

The falling action is what leads up to the final conclusion, in between the conclusion and climax ( high point of tension). For example in story Three little pigs, the falling action would be the point in the story when the wolf can't blow the brick house down and when he tries to go down the chimney. i hope this helps. =)

The falling action is what happens after the climax in your story, it's kind of the reliefe after what your whole story was building up to.

Falling action is the part of a story, usually found in tragedies and short stories, following the climax and showing the effects of the climax. It leads up to the catastrophe. For example, the climax comes when Oedipus realizes that the man he killed was his father, Laius, and the woman he married was his mother, Jocasta. In the falling action, Oedipus and Jocasta feel so guilty that Jocasta kills herself and Oedipus blinds himself. The end is the falling action -- The catastrophe. Jocasta kills herself and Oedipus blinds himself. Good luck.

The section leading from the climax to the conclusion. I Hope you know what the climax is. EX: Climax "bob" dies, falling action: idk...funeral. Conclusion: No more "bob". BUt your short story is hopefully far more complex than this.

Hope this helps!!
