Notebooks usually cool by blowing out hot air from the back or the bottom. Notebooks do generate a lot of heat. To keep you and the notebook cool, I suggest a notebook mat. Some of them have cooling fans built in like the one from targus:

Hi. Most laptops get hot. You can put a book on your lap first and this will keep your legs, and the laptop, cooler.

I have a laptop, too, and I use this free utility to monitor the processor temp and power on the fan. It works great. I used someone else's configuration, then set my fan to come on @93F. It never gets over 108F.
Before I installed SpeedFan, it seemed like my fan only came on when I rebooted.
Also..I have used this for about 2 years and my laptop fan still works great.
This utility is a little hard to configure, so I do recommend using an existing config that matches your M-Board or computer make/model.

Computers produce heat which has to be disipated. Most laptops get fairly warm during regular use. If it is getting hot you are most likely blocking the vents with your legs. Look at the bottem and find where the vents are and try to leave those open to the air.
