ODI is just a matter of playing 50 overs per side or being bowled out (whichever is earlier)
Test matches have n number of overs to bat or bowl
Test is 5 day match. Per day max of 90 overs bowled.
In ODI a team can bat or bowl only once(one inning)
In test matches its 2 inning affair. You have to bat twice and bowl twice until ten wickets taken or the till target is achieved with bat.
Importance is not the issue dear.
But, legends say test matches are real test of caliber because u are supposed to bat or bowl for a long time facing diffferent toughscenario.
Distinction is necessary because ODI is just a matter of day playing only 50overs a side.Test is the real caliber tester.
Eg: In ODI a team will score 300 in 50overs
but in test matches the same team may score only 190 or 200 losing only 1 wicket(like wise). In test mtaches red balls and white clothes are used
In ODI white balls are used.

The main differences between Test Cricket and One Day Internationals are the duration of play and the rules and regulations.
Test cricket is the longest form of the sport of cricket. It has long been considered the ultimate test of playing ability between cricketing nations. It remains the highest-regarded form of the game, although the comparatively new One-Day International cricket is now more popular amongst some audiences. The name "Test" is thought to arise from the idea that the matches are a "test of strength" between the sides involved.
One-Day International (ODI) is a form of cricket, which is played over 50 overs per side between two national cricket teams. One-Day International matches are also called "Limited Overs Internationals (LOI)", because they are limited overs cricket matches between national sides.

Basically,
An ODI (One Day International): 1 day long (about 8-9 hours), 50 overs, more hitting 4s and 6s, faster scoring, generally more exciting.
A Test: 5 days (8 hrs each day), each team bats twice, each team keeps batting until they get all out or they declare, each day 90 overs max are played, if the match doesn't finish in 5 days, its a draw; generally slower paced
Similarities: same rules, same way you win,
There is no difference in importance, but people prefer to watch ODIs because they are shorter and more exciting.
