I sold a dress to a woman and she politely returned it. I refunded her money and the return postage minus the original shipping, but she claims I owe her that. Do you really refund the initial shipping? Doesn't that mean I'm out even more money?

The reason she is returning it is because it was "badly stained", but upon return, I could barely even see what she was talking about (the dress was listed as used and there was normal one-time, minimal discoloring around the edge of the dress under the armpit area). However, shes said I was so nice that she sent me free MAC cosmetics, so I would feel horrible cheating her out of money if I owe this to her, but I would be losing money from my own pocket initially.

Did you post a specific return policy on your auction page?
If you did, then that is what you need to go by.

You should try talking to Ebay's Live Help. It's like a little chat room with an eBay person and they can tell you what needs to be done according to ebay's policy and your specific situation.

From now on, on your auction page make sure you put your specific return policy. Like "Will refund in full" or "Will refund minus shipping"

Did you include a photo of the stained area or make mention of it in your product description? I personally don't sell any clothing items on eBay unless they are completely stain-free and rip-free.

Only once have I returned money to someone who bought something from me and that was because it was damaged in shipping. The buyer didn't ask for their money back, but did let me know that the item arrived damaged. I felt badly. I thought I packaged it very well, but I guess the post office found a way to damage it anyway. Even though she gave me a good rating, I still returned every penny she sent me, because I wanted to retain her good will and keep her as a customer. Shipping costs (especially on something like a dress) are usually small. It's not worth it to have a buyer go away disgruntled. I'd refund her the shipping costs.

now if I bought something off e-bay that was second hand I would expect to find something wrong with it,

now if you advertised as new that is another thing and there was a fault with it I would expect a full return of the money plus return shipping,

your right, in not returning the original shipping costs. anything sold as second hand is bought as is when she bought it as advertised just tell the lady you both took a gamble and lost on the shipping deals.

has she filed a complaint with ebay?? posted bad comments on your account ?? if it was posted as used, and such , then she has no recourse . she never should have sent it back in the first place knowing it was a used item. did it have pictures with the add?? did they show the stain ?? contact ebay , and explain what is goin on .. she never should have sent make-up back with it , since that wasnt part of the deal. let ebay know about that as well..

No you do not. You refunded her funds for the return delivery and for being the winner....it is sufficient. And if she takes itto ebay you have evidence which you refunded the return delivery and the fee she paid. She is making an attempt to rip-off you out of money.

She probably lost an equal amount of money when she posted the dress back to you. And is it really a large enough amount to get worked up about?
