Why do hermit crabs dislike pine wood?

I read that hermit crabs hate pine wood and that one should not buy half logs made of pinewood.

It's not that they don't like it, but that it's bad for them (along with anything made of cedar). If you've ever been around these woods, you'll notice they have a strong smell. These woods have aromatic oils that are responsible for the odor, but they are also an irritant for many insects (why old storage chests were made of cedar to prevent moths from destroying wool items, hecne the "cedar chest"). Hermit crabs are arthropods and related to insects, you you shouldn't use these items with them either.
