Beethoven is considered a classical composer. However, he is considered the main transitional composer into the romantic period. Beethoven's use of nontraditional harmony and simple melodies emphasize his connection to the romantic era.

Beethoven lived from 1770 - 1827. The 'tail' of the Classical period. Although he is a classical composer, like Mozart and Haydn. You could describe him has the first Romantic composer.
He was the king of the sonataform. Specially the development section became great importance. You could describe the sonata form more or less like this:

* Slow introduction
* first theme, second theme(Up a fifth) Together called exposition
* Development
* first theme, second theme(NOT transposed) Together called Reprise
* Coda

Until Beethoven, the development was almost exclusively meant to return to the main key. (Remember, the second theme whas up a fifth) Beethoven decided that he could use this section to play endless with his material. Changing keys, shorten it, make new combinations, etc. That's why Beethoven Symphonies can be much longer than previously. In fact any "loose" part became a greater importance. So for example the part between the first and second theme, The Coda etc.

Beethoven gave the woodwinds and Brass instruments a much more important role in the orchestra. In the 3th Symphony, he introduced a 3th French Horn and in the 9th Symphony, he uses 4 French Horns. The 4th one being very solistic.

Beethoven could write strange sounds, at least for people in his days. In the 3th symphony, the French Horn starts to early with the main theme, just before the reprise. The Violins sound not ready. There is even a story about the horn player apologizing about being early. Beethoven went furious shouting "You ** I meant it this way!!"

Ok, thats all I have to tell for now, good luck with your report
