Google "Berlin Wall"
In someone's infinite wisdom, Berlin was divided into four parts in the settlement of WWII in Europe. Russian, and French, British and American. But the problem was that Berlin sat in the middle of the Russian occupied portion of Germany, East Germany. A narrow corridor connected the rest of Germany to Allied Berlin.
The Soviets built a wall across Berlin to keep traffic from moving between the two parts of Berlin, the Soviet part and the Allied part.

I happened to be in Poland with a college pal and the Polish girl who was to become my wife. I was staying in a bed-and-breakfast in Gdynia sick with the flu on Aug. 13, 1961. My pal and my girlfriend went out to see the city. The TV was on. The houseowner pointed excitedly at the screen and said, "Amerikanische Soldaten! Amerikanische Soldaten!" I thought *so what?* Sure enough, the scene was Berlin, and there were soldiers rushing around everywhere, rifles at the ready. There were American soldiers everywhere in Europe at that time. Only later when my pal and I drove out of Poland, across the Oder River, through East Germany, and into Berlin, through the wall, did we realize what had happened. My pal drove to Paris to ship his car home to the U.S. I went to Copenhagen to catch my flight home to the U.S. I came back to Poland to marry my girlfriend. We are now married 42 years.
