...and yet offer no answer or opinion of their own?

I ask this question in the Motorcycles forum because It happens to the Top Contributors like Guardrail Jim, FireCracker, Nomad, Byron, Ride On and others... when their answers are thoughtful, well worded and perfectly valid.

Sometimes when I review a question, If there's already a good answer, I thumb up it and not leave an answer myself.

If a troll gives a stupid answer, I'll often thumb it down, or if someone doesn't know what they're talking about on a technical question or something I'll thumb it down.

I'll only answer a question if I know what I'm talking about and none of the other answers are better than mine would be.

The "thumbs down" button is, for some, just a way to express one's opinion of the answer given. It may be as simple as meaning "I disagree."

On another forum, ANY discussion on the relative merits of MACs or PCs can generate dozens of thumbs down from the fans on one platform or the other.

I use the "thumbs down" feature when I feel an answer is clearly wrong or inappropriately responsive. I do NOT feel it is appropriate to get into the side discussion of why someone's answer is wrong, unless my response directly deals with the original question. If I have a better answer, I will offer it.

But if someone else's respons is rude, biased or inappropriate, I will simply vote with my button. I may just as likely vote a "thumbs up" for an answer that is as good or better than any I could supply. I don't need to add anything more than my vote.

Pilgrim is dead on. I thought that was what the ratings were for, if you agree, thumbs up and if you know it is wrong, thumbs down. It makes no sense to re-write an answer if the same is already there, but if you try to correct an answer, does the asker REALLY know who is right??? Who is answering your questions? You have NO way of knowing if it is a Master Mechainc, or a 12 year kid that has never seen your car before in his life. That, i thought, was the purpose. But to quote Dennis Miller, "Thats just my opinion, I could be Wrong. "

You could give the best advise possible or the winning lotto numbers before they come out, and people will still give up a thumbs down. That's just how people are.

Remember...,
They laughed at Noah until it started to rain.

I figured they were on to me, and that I was just making all that stuff up! I've never actually ridden a motorcycle or spun a wrench , but I have always had a knack for being able to sound like I know what I'm talking about.

I've found that many people are so negative they just go through all the answeres they can find and give it a thumbs down.. most of the time without even reading the answer.
