I am not sure that there were any real benefits considering the horrible results of trench warfare. There are many outcomes. New technology is one. Poison gas, tanks and gas masks. Another would be World War II. Due to the Western Front being in France and the amount of lives lost by the French and the British, they were bent on making Germany pay for the war. The punishment that was handed down at the Treaty of Versailles would later create the hatred and resentment that Hitler would use to gain power.

The benefits went to men in France and Germany after 1918, because there were so few of them left. Women who wanted to marry had almost no choice. Germany passed a law after 1918 that children born out of wedlock had social benefits. The outcome is a four-letter word.
