The Iran - Iraq war was between just Iran and Iraq. It was during this war that Saddam first used poison gas on people. He later used it on his own people. The Gulf War was short-lived and was between forces of the UN, in particular American forces and Iraq. Iraq had invaded the small country of Kuwait and was trying to claim it as a part of Iraq. The President at that time was George H. W. Bush father of our current President.

No. Well, kind of. Before the invasion of Kuwait (1991), the invasion of Iran by Iraq (1980-1988) was called the "Persian Gulf War." At first the invasion of Kuwait was called the "Second Persian Gulf War." Now it is usually called the "Gulf War" and the first one is called the "Iran-Iraq War." So, in accounts before 1991 the Iran-Iraq War was called the "Persian Gulf War."
Saddam Hussein just couldn't give up invading his neighbors. He added all these war deaths to his toll of routine mass murders inside Iraq.

The Iran/Iraq war began in the mid 80's, and was started by Iraq. There were several land disputes that caused it. It was a brutal war fought using chemicals (Iraq), suicide bombers (mostly Iranian children) that ended in a draw for the most part.

The Gulf war started when Iraq invaded Kuwait, and the US (george bush senior) sent in US troops. (Contrary to one poster, Clinton was not involved)
