He discovered that the premier anatomist to that date, Galen, had been dissecting apes instead of people, and just assuming the anatomies were the same.

He made a lot of discoveries about human anatomy, like that the heart had four chambers (Aristotle had assumed three), but these could have been made by others once he made the realization that much of what was known at the time was simply wrong.
