my mom made me and my brother pay her $30 a week in rent when we got our first jobs, do you think a mother should do that or not? (my sister is having a fit b/c she has to start soon)

my sister is almost 18

I think it is right. Being a mother of three, I think that it is a great way to teach responsibility. It is harder than you think to be on your own. It isn't all it is cracked up to be. I struggled when I first went on my own because my mother didn't teach me anything I needed to know about being on my own. I had to learn by myself. I still have problems being on my own and I have lived out in the world for 7 years. Good luck on your jobs. Your mom is just trying to teach responsibility. Go thank her. You need it.

How many hours does your sister work? If it is part time and she is putting herself through college maybe your mother could exchange money for a suitable chore. If she is out of school she should pay the $30 and be glad it hasn't been raised due to inflation. It sounds like your sister is the baby of the family and is used to be getting her own way if she crabs enough. Maybe instead of paying your mother she could shop and pay for her own food and dry cleaning. That should equal close to $30. Of course she would be paying for her own clothes, cosmetics and other incidentals.

Of course it's fair. If she needs the money to help offset some of the expenses then she should ask for it.
If she doesn't, then it's a good way to teach her how to save money.
I had to pay for my first car, insurance, gas and any thing else I wanted besides food and a place to stay. That's why i got a job.

If you are 18 then why not, I had my first job when I was 13 and stopped living at home when i was 15, get out on your own and then you don't need to worry about what your parents rules

yes you need to learn responsibility. Would you rather her throw you out ? and see how many bills you will have then. My first job, my mom made me give her $100 dollars a month. But that was like 15 years ago. So that was alot then.
Tell ur sis to quit throwing a fit for nothing. Be glad you are not out in the real world yet.

I think It's very fair. In my house (20 years ago) we had to pay $25 / week if we were in school, and $50 / week if we weren't. Kids, especially teens are expensive, there's no reason they can't help with family expenses. You do chores don't you? Same thing. If you are part of the family, you help out.

Until a child is out of high school, they shouldn't have to pay rent. I can't really judge your mom, though, because I don't know the entire situation. Are finances tight? Is she trying to raise you guys alone?

However unfair it seems, I'm sure there is probably a reason behind it. Is she spending the money on herself, or saving it for your college, maybe?

Only if you are seventeen and over anything under that age no kid should have to pay rent or any other expense in the house because that your parent job no their kids.

If you're of legal age and still living with your parents, yeah, I'd expect them to make you pay some rent. They're spending a lot of money on you (food, water, electricity), and they shouldn't need to if you're over 18 and out of high school.
