So, i just came to a deep thought about why we live. Basically, i came to a conclusion saying, "Grow up, Mature, Sexually reproduce to pass out DNA and keep the generation live long, and die.".. I know there might be a lot of disagreement to that, but isn't that true? Give some opinions of what you guys think.

To make a difference. The biological factors are true but it is important to make a difference and to feel like you made a difference but I guess that is at another level. Also if someone ends up feeling special somehow on top of that.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

As far as I can tell, the point is that there is no point. That's both the joy and the frustration of life - that we live with the consequences of our thoughts and actions. I'm trying to say (perhaps inarticulately) that it's our attitude towards these challenges that shape who we are and how we face the world that count. If we focus on the negativity around us, then the world will be, de facto, a negative place. If, however, we focus on the positive aspects of our lives, our world will be a positive place. Maybe.

The reason for life is simple, You work your whole life to chase this thing they call money, if you ask me just a piece of paper. What happened 500 years ago a person found a shinny rock and determined that it was worth something now your whole being is to lie.steal and cheat to get it, then when you finally do get it the government wants there piece. So to sum it up you kill yourself trying to make money, never really make enough, get taxed, pay tax and DIE....

The purpose of your existence is the fulfillment of your human nature in accord with virtue-- this phrase expresses the point of a human life. Your understanding of the point of life, expressed in your question, is that a human nature is no different from that of a plant or animal nature, and if you think that you are equivalent to both, you are really missing a great deal in terms of not only your understanding of the possibilities inherent in a human nature, but your own sense of who you are.

Eric - having just gone through a major life-changing event, I would have to say that the point of life is...

to do what you can (while you can) to make the world a better place. Not only for those immediately around you, but for as many as you can.

Good luck on your quest!

Life is simply not like you have put it... it is far more complex yet simple! The form of a human being was manifested by our soul atman within. It is our soul atman within that is on its cosmic journey of 8.4 million manifestations. Having reached the form of a human being means we have already crossed an ocean of 7.3 million manifestations. As a human being alone we have 1.1 million manifestations... a total journey of 12.1 million earthly years!

It is within this period of 1.1 million manifestations... we have to gain release of our soul atman within. That is possible by our gaining enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha). When a human being reaches the last leg of cosmic life... the 8.4 millionth manifestation... one finally gains enlightenment and secures release for our soul atman within.

In any life a human being can reach the 8.4 millionth manifestation... become a Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or prophet Mohammed. Seems difficult... but not unachievable! Regaining its old pristine pure form... our soul atman within finally goes back to the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism). The human form is the highest manifest stage in the cosmic system. What more can a lusting human form desire!

Progeny is part of the cosmic system... there is nothing bad about it! The main crux of life lies in pursuing a spiritual goal that leads one to the end of cosmic life. All interim stages in life are supposed to be lived... Not passed by as many people often do! Searching for the hidden goal of physical manifested life... pursuing it till the end and ultimately reaching the cosmic end of life... the final goal is what life of a human being is all about!

In a nutshell, we must learn to live life... Not pass by! Most human beings never develop a goal in life. Can such people ever be expected to reach the cosmic end of life within the present manifestation? More on Inner Self and life - http://www.godrealized.org/truce_with_my_inner_self.html

I truly think the point of life is grow..make mistakes...learn from them..and help the others around you not make the same mistakes you learned from....it's not just ourselves that we live for..theres others around us that we must think about and do our best to support them...great idea to make like an enjoyment...and not a pain.....I think that is the biggest purpose...
