you need to wake up and smell the coffee, start looking around you and see which way the water is flowing, in my opinion if you have a bad past then you have to be creative and innovative working your hardest to make things happen for yourself, Your question is so broad that i dont know what you mean by dead ends are you speaking of financial things or relationships??? but i think my advice covers all of those things. When you have motivation it is valuable like gold, combine it with wisdom and intelligance and you have diamonds.

Walk, don't run.
Paying EXTRA MONEY usually solves that problem when it comes to real estate.
Letters of Reference usually solves that problem when it comes to job getting.
GOD opens doors too!
Don't give up.
