Omar Vizquel period. He has the best short stop fielding percentage of all time and won a gold glove at the position at the age of 39.

the wizard of oz, Ozzie Smith. he led National League shortstops in fielding percentage 9 times, assists 8 times, double plays 5 times, and range factor (total plays per nine innings) 8 times. No other shortstop has ever dominated the defensive statistics like Ozzie did.

The best Ive seen is Ozzie Smith. Omar Vizquel is a great shortstop, but Ozzie was unbelievable. I wish I could have watched him more, just not against my Cubs.

The Wizard of Oz!

Ozzie Smith, 13 straight gold gloves is hard to beat!

Omar Vizquel, 9 straight, 11 total is a close 2nd place.

Ozzie Smith without a doubt.

It's Ozzie but Omar is making it closer every year. They are both brilliant with the glove but not so much with the bat. Adam Everett who plays for the Astros could be a candidate by the time he is done too. With Omar aging he is the beat in the game right now, but he needs to show it for a lot longer to really be up there with the big two.

Most people will say Ozzie but Vizquel is better. His fielding % is .984 compared to Ozzies .978.

(Vizquel passed Smith today for most double plays ever by SS)

Ozzie was the most dazzling, and yes, he was amazingly good and worthy of his Hall plaque. But I'd probably take Vizquel or Aparicio if I was only concerned about defense.
