First they asked if I had ever been married and I said, "No." On the rental application they already want to know my son's social security number, why would they want his birth certificate as well?

Its just a formality especially if you are recieving government assistance or assisted housing. You are considered a family unit.

With so many child abductions in this country, I think landlord's are fair in asking these questions. It's about time we all take the right steps to protect children. Someday, you'll look back on this as a really good policy and be glad that your children were being protected. More people should ask more questions maybe kidnapping can really be hindered by some of these steps.

I don't know if it's legal, but it's wierd. Ask them why, and if it's a logical explanation, show them. But they shouldn't have to have any of that on file. It's really none of their business.

If you not pay the rent, they can try to get him to pay.
Most likely I would agree with what mentioned above. Be sure he your child and stuff like that. It sad this how our world is, but, that is how things are.

They cannot ask, that is a good way to do identity thieft, they have no legal reason for needing that information,,,,,

probably to make sure you are his mother and you're not holding or kidnapping a child.......this sort of thing was in the news recently. i think its legal and reasonable. i wouldnt worry or take it personally.
