what would you say the rules for success are for banks?

Companies are usually measured with reference to each other - Banking is one sector and the 'best' Bank only has to beat it's rivals.

(it's like winning against an angry lion - you only have to run faster than the others in your group :-) )

Make as much money as possible by doing as little as possible and charging customers at every turn.
